Second Training
Date: 8th April 2018, Sunday
Time: 10:00 - 13:00
Route: Tai Shui Hang - Tai Wai - Tai Shui Hang
Distance: 13.5 km
In our second training session today, we practiced what we had learnt in the first training. The goal for today was to apply the fundamental techniques, for example, getting on and off the bicycle, hand signs, braking and stopping, changing gears on and off slopes on the route.
A new element we were introduced to in today’s training session was to ride with one hand. This technique can be used during long journeys when riders are thirsty, and they need to drink water. However, we did not apply this on the route as this is an advance technique and it could be dangerous for our teammates to do this without sufficient practice.
We discovered a problem in today’s training while riding on the route which was that we changed gears at the wrong time. After finishing the route, we discussed among ourselves and made some suggestions. For instance, we should lower our gear when we are riding uphill or getting on slope (Suggested: Gear 3/4) and while riding on a plain level and going straight, we should increase our gear to pick up speed (Suggested: Gear 5/6).
Overall, we still need to practice the fundamental techniques in our upcoming training sessions until it becomes second nature to us and a part of our muscle memory. Even though the distance we traveled today was short but the problem we discovered and discussed among ourselves turned out to be an eye opener.
